Explanation

While doing this assignment I took on two different ways for giving out information. The infographic explains to someone that they should become a firefighter and also lists some benefits if someone becomes one. Then I started a newspaper article and this was directed towards an audience that would be interested in the career of being a firefighter, specifically for Green Township. I talk about the requirements for being a firefighter for that township, and also all of the benefits that come along with that position.

The infographic caters to an audience that might be confused about what career they want to pursue or if they are searching for a career. The infographic could get the audience interested in what this career could hold. In highschool, seniors typically have career fairs, this is an opportunity for different employees or employers to give out information about their career or company they work for. I feel like this would be a good way to use this infographic, I am picturing a firefighter that works for Green Township handing these out with their phone number or township address on the back of the infographic. This would also be an opportunity to ask full time working firefighter questions that highschoolers could be having.

The newspaper article would cater to an audience that possibly has the schooling done to become a firefighter and paramedic, but they are searching for a township to start at. I felt like this would be a good way to give out this specific type of information, this newspaper article could also be on the township website. This would be a good way to use this genre since not everyone still looks at the newspaper. It lists the different genres this specific discourse community uses, what the requirements are to become a member of this discourse community, and what the benefits are for becoming a member of the community.

Green Township Fire Department Is Hiring

Fire and EMS Chief Scott Souders

Introduction

There are multiple reasons why you should apply to be a full time firefighter and paramedic. The Green Township offers you a lot of opportunities, we also are a strong, tight community of hard workers to better the community. We always put our employees first to make their working experience as best as it can be. We have 4 fire stations you would get the opportunity to work at, along with 92 total employees. We are the biggest populated township within the state of Ohio. This includes an estimate of 58,000 citizens, more than 29 square miles of land mass, has 14 elementary schools, 3 high schools and a major hospital. This requires our employees to always be ready to work while at a fire station, since we are a busier township.

Requirements and Benefits

Our minimum requirements to apply for this position would include; at least 18 years old, high school diploma or GED, has a Ohio’s drivers license, Ohio certified firefighter I, Ohio certified paramedic, a current candidate physical ability testing certificate at the time of the interview, and at least two years of fire or EMS experience this could be working at a 911 dispatcher as well. Although those requirements are the minimum for this position we have some preferred requirements as well. This would include a car seat technician certificate, Ohio fire safety inspector certificate, and Ohio firefighter II certificate. This job might come with several requirements you must have before applying, it also has just as many benefits when hired. The base salary when hired is $54,634, after working for the township for 12 months the salary increases to $60,502, and then after working for the township as full time after 24 month the salary increases again to $66,392. When you are full time you will have a work schedule of 24 hours working and 48 hours off, you will also have earned days off every 6 weeks. The full time annual compensation package for a full time firefighter/ paramedic is roughly estimated to equal $88,700.  This includes the base salary, family health and dental insurance, holiday pay, along with the Ohio Retirement Contribution.

If you have any other questions regarding this full time job position, feel free to contact Assistant Chief Hummeldorf or District Chief Boggs at (513) 574-0474.

Reflection

I ran into some difficulties while writing out both of these genres for this major assignment. The biggest difficulty was switching my thought process. I went from writing information I was finding from major assignment two to making it creative. I had to change my audience to people that could be interested in this career. The infographic is catered for younger students who could feel lost after high school. While the newspaper article is for individuals who have met the requirements for this career opportunity and they are ready to apply for this position.

For this particular discourse community, they have a lot of genres that come along with it. I listed all of them into the newspaper article, I also listed the requirements to become a member and then finished the assignment with the benefits of joining this community. I didn’t put this into the infographic because the students could either ask the firefighters that are handing them out or they could write the number to the firefighter headquarters where the chief is at, and they could get any questions they have answered there.

Building Block 3.4

While completing major assignment three I felt like I had to switch my thought process from major assignment two. I thought my audience from my infographic could be for high school students that were lost with what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives, so I listed some reasons on why a person would want to become a firefighter. After I established what audience I wanted to focus the infographic on, I then focused on what audience I wanted my second genre to be for. I thought that a newspaper article could be a fun idea to use as if I was on the hiring committee for Green Township. The purpose of the newspaper article is to get the word out that Green Township was wanting to hire a full time employee. I did this by listing out the requirements and the benefits the township has. I was catering this genre to people who have most of the requirements finished, and someone who is actively looking for a full time career. This was much different than composing my major assignment two, just for the fact that I had to put myself in the shoes of an employee for the township, instead of putting information I found into an essay. I found myself usings logos/ logic while writing these two genres, because I am trying to convince a person to feel like a firefighter or the full time position to be the most logical for them. My original discourse community was not really affected while working on major assignment three, I stuck with the same idea. I showed all the genres of this discourse community with the newspaper article, I showed the membership of the discourse community, and also the benefits this discourse community provides.

After I read that we had to use an infographic, I completed my second draft of major assignment three. I did not include my reflection of the assignment.

For major assignment three, I originally picked to use a brochure and a newspaper article. I started the brochure, I never finished it. Then in the middle of working on the brochure I saw that we were supposed to use an infographic. So for my first draft all I had was an unfinished brochure.
